(FMT) – Prime Minister and acting Education Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the free breakfast programme will continue in primary schools but will revert to needy students only.
“Giving breakfast to all means that those who have money, who are rich, who eat at home, get it too. That’s not fair.
“We will continue the programme that we have right now, focusing on those who can’t afford it,” he told reporters at an event here today.
This comes after questions were raised on whether the free breakfast programme would continue following the resignation of former education minister Maszlee Malik on Jan 3.
Maszlee had announced in August that free breakfast will be served to children in primary schools from this month.
He had said this was part of the ministry’s initiatives to ensure that school children had access to nutritious food and that they could stay healthy and focus on their daily lessons.
